About Managing Affairs

What does managing affairs involve?

Managing affairs covers the practical, day-to-day support that elderly and vulnerable individuals and their families often need help with.

Our team provides structured, reliable support that takes the weight off your shoulders. We can work directly with the person who needs help, or we can support family members who are managing affairs on their behalf. Where a Lasting Power of Attorney or Court of Protection deputyship order is in place, we can act in an official capacity to manage legal affairs and finances on an ongoing basis.

How we can help with managing affairs

Our managing affairs service is flexible and tailored to each person's situation. We can provide as much or as little support as is needed, from occasional help with specific tasks through to full ongoing management of someone's financial and legal affairs.

Day-to-day financial management

For individuals who need regular support, we can help with managing bank accounts, paying household bills, pension administration, applying for benefits, paying care staff and managing care home fees. We keep clear records of all transactions and provide regular updates so you always know where things stand.

Paperwork audit and organisation

If paperwork has built up or financial records have become disorganised, our paperwork audit service can help you get things back in order. We sort through bank statements, investment and pension documents, utility bills, property deeds, insurance policies, Wills and Powers of Attorney, flag anything that needs urgent attention and create an organised file for ongoing reference.

We’ll create a binder containing all the information you’ll need to keep your affairs in order. This will include details about bank and savings accounts, utility suppliers and insurance providers, as well as a list of emergency contacts for you to use if needed.

Professional attorney and deputy services

If you have named Roche Legal as a professional attorney in a Lasting Power of Attorney, or if we have been appointed as a professional deputy through the  Court of Protection, we take full responsibility for managing the person’s financial and legal affairs. This includes all day-to-day financial management, liaison with accountants and financial advisers where needed and reporting to the Office of the Public Guardian.

Support for appointed attorneys and deputies

If you have been appointed as an attorney or deputy and are finding the role overwhelming, we can work alongside you. We can help with specific tasks, provide guidance on your obligations and take on the more complex or time-consuming aspects of the role so that you can focus on your relationship with the person you are caring for.

Protection against financial abuse

Elder financial abuse is a serious and growing concern. If you are worried that an elderly or vulnerable person may be at risk, we can advise on the steps available to protect them, including putting a  Lasting Power of Attorney in place or applying to the Court of Protection for a deputyship order.

What to Expect

How does this service work?

We can act in an official capacity if you have chosen to name Roche Legal as a professional attorney in a Lasting Power of Attorney document or if we have been appointed as a professional deputy in a Court of Protection order. We can also support you in a more unofficial capacity if you’re finding it difficult to manage your own affairs, or those of someone for whom you are an attorney or deputy.

FAQs

This service is primarily designed for elderly and vulnerable individuals and their families. It is also available to anyone who feels they would benefit from practical support with managing their own or a loved one’s financial and legal affairs. Many of our clients come to us directly, while others are referred by family members who need help with their caring responsibilities.

If the person you are supporting still has mental capacity, they can instruct us directly and give us the authority to act on their behalf. If they have lost mental capacity and no Lasting Power of Attorney is in place, a Court of Protection application may be needed before anyone can manage their affairs legally. We can advise you on the right approach.

Yes. If you name Roche Legal as a professional attorney in a Lasting Power of Attorney, or if the Court of Protection appoints us as a professional deputy, we take on full responsibility for managing the person’s financial and legal affairs on an ongoing basis. This can be the right choice where no family member is suitable or available to take on the role.

Yes. If you are concerned that an elderly or vulnerable person is at risk of financial abuse, we can advise on the steps available to protect them. This may include putting legal protections in place, reporting concerns to the appropriate authorities or reviewing existing arrangements to identify and address any risks.

Managing affairs often works alongside a Lasting Power of Attorney or a Court of Protection deputyship order. The Power of Attorney or deputyship gives you the legal authority to act. Our managing affairs service provides the practical support to carry out those responsibilities effectively. We can help you put the right legal framework in place and then support you with the ongoing management.
